A perfectly fit pointe shoe feels very snug but not painfully tight. This snug fit gives a dancer the most comfort, support, and safety. Pointe shoes should never be fit with room for growth, which would minimize the dancer's control of movement and increase chances of injury.
The box should hold the toes so that weight is evenly distributed. The dancer should feel weight at the platform without sinking into the box, and should feel supported at the metatarsals. Insufficient pressure in the box will lead to sinking, whereas too much pressure in the box will hold the toes away from the platform. Both conditions lead to pain and lack of control.
The fabric should hug the foot smoothly. An overly tight shoe may show pleating from the satin being stretched around the foot. An overly loose shoe may show gapping from excess fabric.
