How Dance Influences My Life
Dance has been a constant part of my life ever since I was four years old. My first class was called preparation to ballet and I loved it. I moved to music, waved magic wands, and decided that I basically just loved to dance. Throughout the years I’ve moved up in ballet and gradually gotten better, but ever since that first day, dance has had an enormous impact on my life.
The first influence dance has had on my life is how it has taught me to persevere. It was my second summer intensive and I had just barely turned eleven. That was the summer I was eligible for my pointe shoes. We sat on the floor as my teacher slowly listed everyone ready for pointe shoes. My name was not read. I was crushed; almost all of my friends had gotten their pointe shoes. That day I decided to try harder in ballet than I ever had before. I pointed my toes harder, straightened my back and held my stomach. I decided I wasn’t going to give up. All that work paid off, I had my pointe shoes two weeks later. That experience taught me to persevere in all the areas of my life. I’ve learned from dance things aren’t always going to be exactly the way I want them but that doesn’t mean I should give up. Dance has also changed the way I view school. I’ve realized that I’m not going to get a 100% every time but that if I try hard and persevere I can do better next time.
Watching dance has also impacted my life. It has inspired me try hard and dream big. Each year our ballet school performs “The Nutcracker.” Last year a guest dancer from ABT performed as the sugar plum fairy. As I watched from the wings I realized she was one of the best dancers I’ve ever seen. That dancer was a graduate from the ballet school I attend right now! She me realize that maybe someday I could be like her. I used I think that would never have a chance of being a professional dancer. I live in a very small town, not like New York City, or Chicago. That sugar plum fairy changed my view of my future. I realized that she was just like me a long time ago, practicing at the same ballet school, with the same instructors. I don’t know if I want to be a professional dancer or not, but now I know if I try hard enough I can get there.
The third influence dance has had on my life is the way it has given me to express myself. I am a pretty quiet person and it’s really hard for me to express myself with words. I’ll try to explain how I’m feeling or my excitement but it just comes out all wrong. Dance has given me an outlet where I’m not afraid to put myself out there. When I’m sad or angry I can just dance it all away. Having a way to express myself also directly impacts my life at home. When I come home from ballet I feel refreshed and happy no matter what I was feeling before. If I didn’t have dance as an outlet I might take out my feelings on my family. I would never want to have that kind of relationship with my family members. When I express myself through dance it feels as if I’m flying. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.
As you can see dance has a very strong influence on my life. It has taught me to persevere, inspired me, and given me a way to express myself. I don’t know who I would be without dance because it is such a big part of my life. Overall, dance has made me a stronger person and I am excited to see how it will affect my life in the future.
