Step 2: Size

Use the size conversion chart (below) as a general guideline for slipper size. This is a starting point only; size choice must be refined during a fitting. Russian Pointe slippers are created in a soft, high-quality canvas, so sizing should allow for a certain amount of stretch.

Dancers have different preferences for slipper snugness. Many go down a size or more to achieve their desired level of snugness (and allow for stretching). Generally, new slippers should be snug and formfitting, but not so tight that the toes are curling or overlapping, or the slipper is uncomfortable.

Checking Size

• On flat, the heel should fit closely without tightness. The toes should reach the end of the slipper, but not push hard against it.
• In demi-pointe, the slipper should allow the toes to be flat on the floor. There should be no “empty” fabric at the end of the toes. The heel should be secure, not slipping off.
• In plié, the heel should be very snug, but without pinching and discomfort. The toes should be able to remain flat while pressing toward the end of the slipper.
• In tendu, there should be no significant gapping at the toes or heel.
