Step 3: Width
The first four Russian Pointe slipper widths correspond roughly to the widths of Classic Collection pointe shoes. However, many dancers go down a width from their pointe preference, to allow for stretching. Widths above width 4 may be considered “extra wide,” and are available in adult sizes only.
Width should be chosen so that the slipper is snug and formfitting, yet not tight and constricting. The slipper should hug the toes, but not squeeze them tightly or cause them to overlap.
Checking Width
- On flat, there should be no gapping at the sides. The toes and heel should feel snug but not tight.
- In demi-pointe, the slipper should allow the toes to be flat on the floor. There should be no empty canvas at the sides of the toes. The heel should be secure, not slipping off.
- In plié, the toes should be hugged snugly but still remain flat and not overlapping.
- In tendu, there should be minimal gapping and pleating at the toes.
Models and Widths
Model and width interact. Because of the differences in design around the toes between Andante and Nouveau/Virtuoso, some dancers may need a wider width in one model than in another. When changing models, it is important to adjust fitting, especially width.
